Markdown table syntax

  • Pipes separate the columns and a separator row sits under the header row.
  • :--- aligns a column left, :---: centers it, and ---: aligns it right.
  • A pipe character inside your text is escaped automatically so it does not break the table.
  • The output works on GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, Stack Overflow and most markdown editors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does the markdown table maker do?

It lets you build a table by typing into editable cells, then turns it into clean markdown that you can copy or download as a .md file for GitHub, GitLab, Notion or any markdown editor.

How do I set column alignment?

Each column has its own alignment selector. Left gives :---, center gives :---: and right gives ---: in the markdown separator row, exactly the standard markdown syntax.

Do I lose my data when I change the number of columns?

No. When you add or remove rows or columns, the existing cell content is kept. New cells start empty and removed cells are the only ones lost.

Where can I paste the generated markdown?

Anywhere markdown is supported: GitHub READMEs and issues, GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Stack Overflow, Discord and most documentation tools.

Is the markdown table maker free?

Yes, the tool is completely free to use with no signup, and everything runs in your browser so nothing is sent to a server.
