- The square-root curve helps low marks more than high marks.
- A custom factor of 1.0 leaves marks unchanged — useful as a sanity check.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which moderation methods are available?
The tool offers three methods: a linear shift that adds the difference so the top scorer reaches full marks, a square-root curve using 10 times the square root of raw times the square root of total over 100, and a custom scale factor you set yourself.
How does the square-root curve work?
Each mark is scaled with the formula 10 times the square root of raw marks times the square root of total divided by 100, which raises low marks more than high marks. The result is rounded to one decimal and capped at the total marks.
Can moderated marks exceed the total?
No. Every moderated mark is capped at the total marks, so no student can get more than the full score.
How do I copy the moderated marks?
After calculating, click Copy Moderated Marks. The moderated marks are copied as a simple list, one per line, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.
