How to use
- Enter the dish name, the number of servings in one batch, and your target margin percentage.
- Add each ingredient: name, the unit you buy it in, the cost of one unit, and the quantity used in the dish. The per-dish and per-serving costs update automatically.
- The suggested selling price is calculated from your target margin so you never underprice a dish.
- Press Save dish to store it. Load any saved dish back into the builder to adjust it, or delete it from the comparison table.
Tips
- Measure what you actually use. Even 20 extra grams of an expensive ingredient changes the per-serving cost.
- Most small restaurants target 60 to 70 percent gross margin on food. Below 50 percent, one price rise in the market can erase your profit.
- Recheck ingredient costs monthly. The dish cost follows market prices, and so should your menu price.
- Compare dishes to find your stars: low cost, high margin items that guests actually order.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I cost a dish with the Menu Cost Calculator?
Enter the dish name and servings, add each ingredient with its unit, unit cost and the quantity used, then press Add ingredient. The per-dish cost, per-serving cost and suggested selling price update automatically.
How is the suggested selling price calculated?
Enter your target margin percentage. The tool divides the per-serving cost by one minus the margin, so a Rs 100 serving cost with a 60 percent target margin suggests a selling price of Rs 250.
Can I compare several dishes side by side?
Yes. Press Save dish to store the recipe with its costs and margin. The comparison table lists every saved dish with its total cost, per-serving cost, target margin and suggested price.
Can I edit or delete a saved dish?
Press Load next to a saved dish to bring it back into the builder with all its ingredients, adjust anything, and save it again. Press Delete to remove it from the comparison table.
What units can I use for ingredients?
You can price ingredients per gram, kilogram, millilitre, litre, piece or pack. Just enter the cost for one of that unit and the quantity used in the dish.
Where are my dishes saved?
Your dishes are saved in your own browser with localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server, so your recipes and costs stay private on your device.
