Practical tips for small shopkeepers
- Track the cost of goods separately from expenses. Rent, staff pay and utility bills are fixed — if you mix them with stock cost, you will never know your true margin.
- Watch the daily average profit, not just total sales. High sales with a thin margin can still leave you with almost nothing at the end of the month.
- Use the break-even number as your daily target. If your daily sales are below it, you are losing money — cut a cost or raise a price before the month ends.
How to use
- Enter total sales for the period, the cost of the goods you sold, and your operating expenses.
- Set the number of days the figures cover (30 for a month, 7 for a week).
- Press "Calculate Profit" to see gross profit, net profit, margin, daily average and break-even.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between gross profit and net profit?
Gross profit is sales minus the cost of goods sold. Net profit is what is left after operating expenses are also subtracted from gross profit.
How is the profit margin calculated?
Profit margin is net profit divided by total sales, multiplied by 100. It shows how much of every sale you actually keep.
What is the break-even estimate?
The daily sales amount needed so that gross profit exactly covers operating expenses. At that point the shop makes neither a profit nor a loss.
