Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which voices can I choose from in the Text to Speech Reader?

The voice list is filled from your own browser through the Web Speech API, so the available voices depend on your browser, operating system and language packs. Every voice speaks locally on your device, and the dropdown shows the voice name and language for each one.

How do the rate, pitch and volume controls change the speech?

Rate sets the speaking speed from 0.5 times (slow) to 2 times (fast), with 1.0 as the normal pace. Pitch moves the voice from deep (0) to high (2), with 1.0 as the natural pitch. Volume sets how loud the playback is from 0 to 1, where 1.0 is full volume. The current value of each control is shown next to its slider.

How is the estimated speaking time calculated?

The tool counts the words in your text and divides by about 150 words per minute at the normal rate, then adjusts for your selected rate setting. The estimate updates live as you type, so a 300 word passage shows roughly 2 minutes at rate 1.0 and about 1 minute at rate 2.0.

What do the Play, Pause, Resume and Stop buttons do?

Play starts reading your text from the beginning with the selected voice, rate, pitch and volume. Pause freezes the speech mid sentence, Resume continues from exactly where it stopped, and Stop cancels the speech completely. If you press Play while speech is already running, the current speech stops and starts again from the top.

Is my text sent to a server or saved anywhere?

No. All reading happens inside your browser with the built in speech engine, so your text never leaves your device, is never uploaded and is never stored. The tool also works offline once the browser voice you picked is installed on the device.

What happens if my browser does not support speech synthesis?

The tool shows a clear message that your browser does not support speech synthesis and keeps the controls disabled. Speech playback works in modern versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari; try one of those browsers if you see the message.
