Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does the Zakat on Shares and Stocks Calculator do?
It estimates zakat on your shares and stocks holdings. You choose whether you hold them for trading or long-term investment, enter the portfolio value, dividends, loans and nisab, and it shows the estimated zakat amount.
Should I calculate zakat differently for trading and long-term investment?
Yes. For trading shares the calculator takes 2.5 percent of the market value plus dividends, minus loans. For long-term investment it takes 2.5 percent of dividends only, minus loans, because most scholars say zakat on investment shares is due on dividends.
What inputs does the zakat calculator need?
It needs the current market value of your shares, yearly dividends received, any loans or liabilities to subtract, and the nisab amount. The nisab must be entered manually, based on the current rate of 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold.
Does the calculator check whether my amount reaches the nisab?
Yes. It compares your zakatable amount with the nisab you entered and tells you whether zakat is due. No zakat is charged if the amount is below nisab.
Should I confirm the result with a scholar?
Yes. Scholars differ on zakat rulings for shares, so the result is only an estimate. Confirm the final amount with your mufti before paying zakat.
